MARCY EDELSTEIN     sculpture  drawing  /   digital art

The ceramic sculptures in the "Ghost Series" are loosely based on "Summergarden – Wintergarden," a series of multi-paneled drawings developed during the same time period. Both the drawings and the sculptures reference plant  and animal forms and maintain an animated quality that speaks to the vitality and persistence of nature. But unlike the very gestural drawings, these earthenware sculptures are hand-built from coils, scraped and sanded to arrive at a highly refined surface and form. Their clean, white surfaces allow the forms to breath and glow. Many of the pieces have been suspended in stands fashioned from tomato cages – referencing an underlying theme of the both the drawings and the sculptures, that of nature controlled and constrained.
