MARCY EDELSTEIN     sculpture  drawing  /   digital art

The ceramic wall sculptures in the TOOLKIT series began as small notebook studies that were then scaled up and translated into cardboard templates that served as guides for building the final pieces in clay. The series draws from a vocabulary of forms derived from animal and plant forms, as well as tools and architectural elements, to arrive at a series of wall pieces that serve as metaphors for the nature–culture dichotomy. The sculptures are hand-built from clay coils and extensively sanded and shaped. After bisque-firing the pieces I applied multiple translucent layers of airbrushed acrylic paint.
