MARCY EDELSTEIN     sculpture  drawing  /   digital art

In this series of ceramic wall pieces I am exploring forms and surfaces that address the mutability and vulnerability of the body. Many of the shapes that predominate in these wall pieces echo work on paper from much earlier in my career, collages built from layers of dress pattern pieces to create networks of lines and emerging shapes, like bodies flattened and stretched into maps. One of my primary objectives in this ongoing body of work is to create a connection between the immediacy of drawing and the tactility of clay. Drawing has always played a central role in my creative practice and lies at the core of my sculptural work. I draw to discover new formal possibilities and make connections between shapes and ideas. That process is revealed in my work on paper as layers of mark, gesture and erasure, a process that translates well into the building of a piece of sculpture with clay coils.
